When I was 15 I moved in with my grandparents. A woman stopped by the house and gave my grandmother 5 pics of me as a baby. Thats when I found out I spent a large portion of my youth in the foster care system. Since seeing those few photographs, pictures and nostalgia have felt incredibly important to me. Moved to NYC shortly after high school to make movies. After 15 years making movies and taking photos for fun my wife and I started Noah & Jules in Guilford, Connecticut. Where we keep ourselves busy in the New England wedding world. We absolutely love the wedding industry! We have always loved personal projects as well and recently wanted to make them more public. My wife, Julianna has expanded her artsy and beautiful world of Boudoir. Me, the artsy quiet guy who tinkers in the studio with various objects and people.
So here we go!
Portrait photography has intrigued me for many reasons. One as a way for me to get my introvert body out of the dark studio and meet new people. Then there is the legacy aspect. An image that freezes you in time and place. A tangible thing that lingers for millions to see or be lost in a dresser drawer like a time capsule.
That tattoo portraits were desirable to me because it felt like layers of art. I also wanted to bring a softer side to the stereotype of what is historically known as dark and edgy.
This is one of the first studio still life images I truly loved creating. I have always been inspired by the light and dark of stories. I get inspired by hardships and emotional from the small victories.
The story of this image to me feels like a self portrait in a way. Growing up, life was incredibly difficult. Years in and out of the foster care system. I always escaped through movies, music and art. This image to me is the violent world surroundings and the one that made a choice to break the cycle.
There is a common thread in many works I create. A light side exposed of the dark stereotype or vice versa.
